Throughout Marlboro’s history, Western Avenue has always been a busy business corridor. This street has been frequently home to drug stores, general stores, bakeries, ice cream parlors, and meat and barber shops, the town’s post office, restaurants and taverns, residential homes, and more. Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps show a plethora of differing businesses that have come and gone over the years. We hope to narrow these businesses down with more research and a future tour specific to this street.
The Carpenter Building, built in the 1800s, was located where part of the bank's parking lot is today. The building remained standing until the 1970s, when it was demolished to make way for the town’s new bank. The post office was located here, along with numerous different other shops that changed hands over the years.
The area that today includes Frank’s Deli and the Wine Store, used to be home to numerous shops over the years, including Barclay’s Drug Store, Badner’s General Store, the Grand Union, Roger’s Electric Appliances, and more.
